With the Mad River winding northwest to converge with the Nottawasaga River, this area experiences floods in the early spring, attracting a myriad of waterfowl. Historically this land was a forested floodplain, then cleared for rich farm land as part of the McKinnon settlement. It is now reverting back to its natural state and is managed by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority.
Located 12 feet above the Minesing Wetlands, the new Waterfowl Viewing Window is a tower that gives one a bird’s eye view of a variety of wetland ecosystems, showcasing various habitat and wildlife. This perspective will allow people to witness the great migration and nesting habits of more than 200 bird species, especially in early spring time when the water level rises.
The Waterfowl Viewing Window is one of many access points the NVCA owns and manages to allow the public to experience and explore the Minesing Wetlands. This project would not have been possible without generous donations from various groups including the Friends of Minesing Wetlands and the Environmental Committee of the Rotary Club of Barrie. To visit the Waterfowl Viewing Window, go west on Hwy 90 towards Angus, turn right on McKinnon Road then take a left on to Concession 2 Sunnidale. The tower will be on your right.
