Recent Rotary Awards!
David Mills made a special presentation to everyone’s favourite Rotarian, Charles Wilson who was nominated by our club to receive the Ontario Government Volunteer Service Awards. Charles has lived in Barrie for 61 years and has been a member (as well as a Past President) of our club since 1951. In 1967 Charlie initiated a project to plant trees throughout the City of Barrie. Each spring, volunteers from our Rotary Club meet on a Saturday, dig holes, plant the tree balls, landscape the area and water. To date there have been more than 1000 trees planted in the City of Barrie, some now in excess of 30 feet.

The Rotary Club of Barrie has now designated an annual award to a person or group within the City of Barrie that demonstrates environmental initiatives. This has become known as the Charlie Wilson Environmental Award. President Greg presented Charlie with a Paul Harris Award (not his first). Charlie thanked the club and wanted to make a point that the initiative also started through the work of his friend Bill Clark, as shown on a monument at Centennial Park. Charlie summarized his efforts by quoting the fictional Freddie Wooster “You can’t leave it all to the Boy Scouts”. Charlie will be honoured on June 23rd by the Honourable Eric Hoskins, Minister of Citizenship.
